the flight is done and i am finally here. i just had my first cape verdean meal, tuna fish and french fries.

i was definitely the only person of non cape verdean descent flying out to sal. well, aside from the 3 mormon missionaries. elder rice and elder benitez. they were 18, straight out of high school, and they were dressed in suits that didn’t quite fit them and they definitely looked awkward and nervous and out of sorts, standing apart from the rest of the people waiting for the flight. but mormons, they’re everywhere.

and speaking of everywhere, someone i met on the plane told me there are a lot of chinese people in cape verde, especially in praia. this completely shocked me and i didn’t quite believe him. until i got here in sal, and lo and behold, chinese people. walking down to the street, people refer to me and che as chinese, chinese. but it is in now way offensive or racial at all. apparently the chinese store owners here do not associate with the rest of the community, and are only seen in their lojas (stores) and never anywhere else. so people are used to chinese people, but know almost nothing about them.

i wanted to talk about boston, but that will have to wait i suppose. boston was amazing though.

and email. wendyhsu@comcast.net is a better bet.
