go watch in america.

what an amazingly beautiful film, and definitely one of the best movies i’ve seen in a long time. it’s written and directed by jim sheridan and based on his own personal story of moving to america with his family and 2 daughters after the death of his brother in ireland. only the movie changes that to the death of his son. and it is beautiful, and enchanting, and heartbreaking. and the loss and coping of afterwards, it is a real grief and not a hollywood sugar coated version of grief. the father closes himself off in self-preservation, emotionally holding himself back from feeling, from not utterly falling apart and breaking down. the mother that makes believe for her 2 daughters, the resilience and faith that they will survive this. and the older daughter that separates herself from all the intangible feelings by capturing everything on film, and viewing the world through the viewfinder of her camcorder. and through it all there is a quiet desperation that runs and weaves into the story; faith, hope, redemption, waking up from the numbness, and living verses merely surviving.

the movie is magical and romantic, without pretenses. and it is so very very real. salon.com has a great review.
